Srinagar, Feb 28 (KINS): The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remains closed for traffic on Friday as authorities intensify efforts to clear shooting stones and mud slush that have significantly disrupted movement along the vital route.
News agency KINS reported that the closure, which took effect yesterday evening, was caused by rain and continuous shooting stones at various locations between Nashri and Navyug, compounded by heavy mud slush near Mehd in Ramban district.
The situation worsened on Friday due to persistent rainfall, which continues to trigger frequent stonefall from the surrounding hill slopes, making it difficult for authorities to restore the road.
The ongoing inclement weather has not only slowed down clearance operations but has also posed a safety risk to workers on the ground.
Traffic police officials have strongly advised against traveling on the highway until further notice.
“The safety of travelers is our primary concern. Given the unstable weather and continuous stonefall, the highway is currently unsafe for vehicular movement. We urge everyone to avoid traveling until conditions improve, and the road is cleared for safe passage,” one of the top traffic police officials told KINS.
The decision on whether the highway will open tomorrow will be made in the morning, following assessments by the concerned authorities. Authorities have deployed heavy machinery and specialized teams to clear the debris and restore connectivity, but due to the unpredictable nature of the weather, no definitive timeline for reopening has been given.
Commuters are urged to stay updated through official channels and reconsider their travel plans until clearance operations are completed and the highway is confirmed safe for use.(KINS)
