Hopeful J&K will regain statehood soon: CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, April 15 (KINS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday expressed optimism about the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, saying the “appropriate time” for such a move has arrived.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a bridge in Pulwama district, Omar Abdullah said, “It’s been six months since the Assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited, and I had a detailed meeting with him. It was a positive discussion, and I remain hopeful that J&K will regain its statehood soon.”

Responding to criticism from the opposition that the government avoided a discussion on the Waqf Amendment Act, Abdullah clarified that procedural limitations prevented the motion from being admitted.

“The adjournment motion brought by the members was not suitable for the topic. Such motions are meant to discuss matters that fall under the jurisdiction of the JK government. Since the Waqf Bill was passed by Parliament, not the local government, there was no way for the assembly to debate it in that format,” he explained.

Omar Abdullah added that while the motion failed, parties including the National Conference have taken the matter to the Supreme Court. “Let’s now wait and see what the apex court says,” he said.(KINS)
