Srinagar, Sept 06 (KINS):The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Saturday described the incident at the Hazratbal shrine as “most unfortunate and uncalled for,” stressing that religious places are centres of faith, purity, and sanctity meant to spread messages of humanity, unity, peace, and harmony—not arenas for political controversy.
In a statement issued to KINS, the JKPCC reiterated that Congress has always upheld the guiding principles of the Constitution, which guarantee freedom of religion and non-interference in the religious affairs of any community or institution. The party made it clear that while it does not condone violence or violations of law, it recognises the people’s democratic right to protest against any wrong, especially when it concerns religious sentiments.
Raising questions over the episode, the party asked: What caused the provocation? Who was behind it, and why? It said those responsible for sparking the controversy cannot escape accountability. “We hold the highest respect for national symbols, but it is unheard of to display such emblems or nameplates of political leaders within revered places of worship, particularly in Muslim shrines. What necessitated this action at Hazratbal requires answers from those whose personal or political agenda triggered resentment and unrest among the faithful,” the statement added.
The Congress urged that the matter be resolved in light of religious sensitivities and constitutional traditions, with a focus on maintaining peace, harmony, and the rule of law.(KINS)
