Food safety department seizes 5 quintals of Namkeen snacks, seals manufacturing unit in Srinagar

Srinagar, Oct 09 (KINS): In a major action against the sale of unsafe and substandard food items, the Food Safety Department Kashmir seized around five quintals of Namkeen snacks and sealed an unlicensed manufacturing unit operating from Abhanshah, HMT Srinagar.

According to an official statement issued to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS), a team of Food Safety Officers, led by the Assistant Commissioner Food Safety Srinagar, conducted the inspection as part of a sustained drive against food adulteration and unhygienic processing practices.

The unit was found operating without a valid licence and under highly unsanitary conditions.

During the inspection, approximately five quintals of Namkeen snacks — including items like katlam and finni — were seized. Samples of the products were lifted for analytical testing, and the unit was immediately sealed to prevent further manufacturing.

Authorities have confirmed that a formal complaint under relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the associated Rules and Regulations, 2011, will be filed before the competent court.

Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration J&K, Smitha Sethi, has directed all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to strictly comply with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, warning that stern action will be taken against violators.

Consumers have been urged to report food safety concerns by calling the Toll-Free Number 104.(KINS)
