Centre rejects reports of four-year LPG recovery, says supply situation stable

Srinagar, April 16 (KINS): The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has dismissed reports claiming that India’s LPG supply may take up to four years to recover, calling them “misleading” and based on an unnamed government official.

In a statement shared on social media, the ministry said such claims create a false impression about the country’s LPG supply position and are part of a coordinated misinformation campaign aimed at spreading panic.

The ministry said India’s energy system is stronger and more resilient than ever before. It added that the country has already diversified its LPG imports and is now sourcing supplies from the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria and Russia.

According to the ministry, 800 thousand metric tonnes of LPG import cargoes have already been secured and are on the way to India. At the same time, under the LPG Control Order issued on March 9, 2026, all refineries have been directed to maximise LPG production. As a result, domestic daily LPG output has increased by nearly 40 per cent to 50 thousand metric tonnes, against a daily national requirement of around 80 thousand metric tonnes.

The ministry further said that around 50 lakh LPG cylinders were delivered every day in March and no gas agency anywhere in the country has reported running out of stock. The average booking-to-delivery period remains unchanged at five to six days.

Officials also highlighted that India’s LPG infrastructure has expanded significantly over the last decade. The number of LPG connections has risen from 14.52 crore to 33.39 crore, while the number of distributors has increased sharply, strengthening the country’s ability to meet demand.

The ministry advised citizens not to believe rumours or unverified reports and to rely only on official information released through government channels. (KINS)
