Srinagar, Oct 24 (KINS): Member of Legislative Assembly for Habba Kadal Constituency, Shamima Firdous, on Thursday voiced strong dissatisfaction with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), labeling it a “defunct department” and criticizing the absence of development in her constituency under the ‘Smart City project’.
“The SMC is defunct. Ever since they took on more responsibilities, nothing seems to be functioning properly. I am not satisfied with their performance,” Shamima said, according to news agency KINS.
She highlighted the poor condition of community centers in her constituency, stating that although fees are collected for their use, they remain neglected.
“Our community centers charge ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 for events, but nobody takes care of them. Their condition has worsened.”
Firdous further criticized the lack of significant work in the Habba Kadal constituency, particularly under the Smart City initiative.
“There is no visible progress here. The only mention of our area in the Smart City project is one bridge, which they say is more of a headache than a benefit,” she remarked.
The MLA also raised concerns about basic issues like defunct water pipes and other infrastructure problems. “In my constituency, there are many unresolved issues. The officers need to be accountable, and every department must deliver for the public. We don’t want to harm anyone, but they must work for the people.”
Firdous shared these remarks with a news channel after holding a review meeting with local officials, where she called for accountability and emphasized the need for weekly progress reports to ensure timely completion of projects.
“The people have voted for us, and now it’s our responsibility to deliver. The officers may have been working, but now the progress must be visible to the public,” she stressed.
Addressing the larger political context, Shemema Firdous added, “In the last 10 years, the essential services like clean drinking water remain unresolved in some areas. This is unacceptable. The people deserve better.”
Shamima Firdous assured her constituents that she would continue pushing for reforms, holding officials accountable, and ensuring that the people’s needs are met.
“We are here to work for the people. They have placed their trust in us, and we must not let them down,” she concluded.(KINS)
