Srinagar, Oct 24 (KINS): The Women’s Premier League (WPL) cricket tournament, now in its fourth edition, has emerged as a powerful force for social transformation in Kashmir.
Organized by the Indian Army under the Varmul Gindo initiative, the league is one of only three opportunities for women cricketers in the valley, offering a platform for young women to pursue their passion for sports despite societal challenges.
News agency KINS reported that featuring teams from different districts of Kashmir, the WPL has become a symbol of change in a region where girls often face resistance in pursuing sports professionally.
Expanding in its last edition to include school-level teams, the league has created more opportunities for aspiring women cricketers to showcase their talent.
One of the WPL’s greatest achievements is breaking societal barriers. The Indian Army, through community outreach programs, has engaged local leaders, religious scholars, and families, gaining support for women’s participation in sports. Parent-coach meetings and community workshops have played a key role in building trust and addressing concerns.
The impact of the WPL goes beyond sports.
The program has empowered young women, turning them into role models in their communities. It has also opened up job opportunities, with the Army providing positions for coaching assistants and sports administrators. Talented players are even given preference in Army recruitment under sports quotas, offering them career paths in the armed forces.
The WPL has also strengthened the bond between the Army and local communities, building mutual trust and understanding.
The Army’s presence ensures security, addressing a common concern among parents. “The Army’s involvement gives us a sense of security,” said Rukhsana, a parent whose daughter plays in the league. “We know our children are in safe hands.”
The success of the WPL has sparked plans for expansion, with similar programs being considered in other sports, making it a model for positive change in Kashmir and beyond.(KINS)
