Docs advise people to take precautionary measures amid severe cold in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 13 (KINS): As Kashmir witnesses severe cold weather conditions, health experts have advised people to take precautionary measures to combat the bone-chilling cold.

The cold wave has caused temperatures across the region to plunge, with Srinagar recording sub-zero levels, dipping below minus 3 degrees Celsius for several consecutive nights.

Doctors warn that the freezing temperatures have led to a sharp rise in cases of cardiac arrests, strokes, and respiratory infections.

Cardiologists link the surge to physiological changes induced by extreme cold, such as the constriction of arteries.

Dr. Manzoor Ahmad, a chest specialist, highlighted the increased vulnerability of children and the elderly. “Winter aggravates respiratory diseases, and we are witnessing a rise in infections during this period. High-risk individuals should avoid unnecessary exposure to the cold, particularly in the morning and evening,” he told news agency KINS.

Respiratory ailments, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchitis, have also seen an uptick as they are exacerbated by the cold.

“Cold weather significantly heightens the risk of heart attacks, with about 30% of victims being under 40,” said Dr. Mohammad Shafi.

He also cautioned that strokes are more likely during the early morning and evening hours due to frigid temperatures. (KINS)
