Damage assessment nears completion, Govt to take up relief for Shelling victims with Centre: CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, May 23 (KINS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said that the government is nearing completion of a comprehensive damage assessment caused by cross-border shelling from Pakistan, and will soon approach the Centre to secure relief for the affected residents.

“The assessment is almost complete. We are awaiting reports from two districts. Once those are in, we will take up the matter with the Government of India and work on formulating a relief package,” Abdullah told reporters as per news agency KINS.

The shelling, which intensified following Operation Sindoor — India’s retaliatory strike after the Pahalgam terror attack — has left numerous border villages in distress. Abdullah acknowledged the scale of hardship and underlined the administration’s commitment to ensuring swift support for those impacted.

He also expressed appreciation for the solidarity shown by national leaders across party lines. “Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit Poonch tomorrow to meet with the victims. I am especially grateful to the Trinamool Congress leaders, who were the first to reach the affected areas. They began in Poonch and are currently in Rajouri,” he said.

“These visits send a powerful message — that the nation stands united with our people in these testing times,” the Chief Minister added.(KINS)
