Srinagar, Sept 11 (KINS): Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday described the implementation of the three new criminal laws as a “historic transformation” of India’s justice system.
Speaking at J&K Police Public School Bemina, Manoj Sinha as per news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) said that the new generation will be happy to know that after almost 150 years, India has ushered in a new criminal justice system. These reforms mark the beginning of a new era,” Sinha said.
He said the three newly enacted criminal laws have brought a historic transformation in India’s justice system by shifting the focus from punishment to victims’ rights.
Tracing the reform process, Sinha said it began in 2019 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed a comprehensive review of British-era legislations. “Feedback was sought from all states and union territories, and based on that, new laws were framed to ensure justice and equality for all,” he noted.
The Lieutenant Governor said the fresh legal framework has dismantled the colonial system of oppression, replaced outdated imperial laws, and introduced forensic investigation as a mandatory tool in serious crimes.
Underscoring the importance of public awareness, he urged the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Education Department, and the Legal Services Authority to continue holding outreach programmes.
“I am glad that the Crime Branch Kashmir has launched this initiative. I hope Crime Branch Jammu and district authorities will also take it forward,” he said.
For the first time, Sinha added, terrorism has been explicitly defined in Indian law as acts that threaten national unity, public safety, or peace. “These provisions will reinforce the policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and help rid the region of its menace,” he said.
The LG urged law enforcement agencies and institutions to work with dedication to ensure effective implementation, so that the benefits of the new system reach every citizen.(KINS)
