Kulgam gunfight: ‘Human Rights abuses exacerbates the situation on ground’

Srinagar: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Wednesday condemned use of ‘brute force’ on civilians in Kulgam saying such force only exacerbates situation on ground.

Mirwaiz was commenting on the forces action against civilians during a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Kulgam where at least 60 people have been injured.
Taking to his Twitter Mirwaiz said, “Use of brute force and pellet guns against civilians continues unabated even during holy month of #Ramadan especially in #SouthKashmir causing grievous injuries and even fatalities. #HumanRights abuses including the use of #PelletGuns only exacerbates the situation on ground rather than improving it.Peoples aspirations regarding resolution of #KashmirDispute can only addressed politically, not through force.” He wrote.

At least 60 persons were injured, seven of them seriously in government forces action during clashes following a gunfight in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Wednesday.

The government forces also called off the operation as militants have reportedly managed to escape.

The encounter ensued after a joint team of army’s 9 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Tazipora area of Mahmoodpora following information about the presence of some militants.
