China dumping more ammunition in Ladakh region: Reports

New Delhi: As Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tours Ladakh, there are reports of new ammunition dumps by the Chinese in the Ladakh region

After the disengagement in the Pangong area, the PLA troops are in camps along the Western Highway. The new dumps are in Rudok, Tashigong, Shiqhanhe and Kanxiwar. The new dumps are clear signs of de-escalation, which refers to a wider pullout in Ladakh according to earlier agreements, not happening post disengagement in Pangong.

In recent weeks, even the Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, has spoken of the PLA soldiers being conscripts and not being hardy enough for fighting in the mountains, particularly in the winter months. Now, new PLA training facilities are coming up in Tibet, probably because the Chinese high command is aware of the shortcomings of some of the troops.

A training camp for Chinese border defence soldiers is being set up in Tibet. To ensure soldiers get used to high altitude, the camp is going to be at about 5,000 metres above sea level. This will be a large camp, of about 1,000 sq metres, complete with solar panels. This is another sign that the PLA seems serious about a long-term deployment in mountainous regions like Ladakh.
