Army intensifies counter-infiltration measures in Kashmir ahead of JK Assembly elections

By: Arshad Farooq

Srinagar, Sep 06 (KINS): As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for its upcoming Assembly elections, the Indian Army is stepping up its counter-infiltration operations, particularly along the Line of Control (LoC) and in critical high-altitude and forested areas in the valley.
To safeguard the electoral process and prevent any cross-border threats, the Army is redeploying troops to strategic locations, intensifying search operations.
“While the Army maintains a constant presence along the LoC and its adjacent fence through permanent operating bases, additional Tactical Operations Bases (TOBs) will be established in vulnerable areas in Kashmir valley to enhance security during the election period,” sources in the Army told news agency KINS.
This increased military presence aims to prevent infiltration attempts by terrorists, especially in regions known for heightened activity.
An Army official emphasized the significance of these measures, stating, “The upcoming elections require us to ensure a secure environment. Our forces have enhanced deployment along the LoC and other sensitive areas. By redeploying troops and strengthening surveillance, we are working to prevent any disruptions.”
To support these efforts, Route Opening Parties (ROPs) will increase their activities, and a higher number of check posts, including mobile units, will be deployed to monitor movement in high-risk areas.
“Drones will play a crucial role in maintaining real-time surveillance over vulnerable zones,” Army said.
Sources told KINS that as part of a broader security strategy, surveillance on known overground workers (OGWs) has been ramped up, with intelligence networks actively monitoring suspicious activities.
Security forces have already outlined strategic responses to deal with any potential security challenges during the election period.
Sources told KINS that in the interest of public safety, certain tourist spots, particularly those near forested areas along the LoC, may remain temporarily off-limits during the election period. (KINS)
