J&K’s per capita Income remains below National Average

Srinagar, March 11 (KINS): The per capita income (PCI) of Jammu and Kashmir remains below the national average, with the Union Territory’s PCI estimated at ₹1,54,703 for 2024-25, compared to the national average of ₹2,00,162, according to the Economic Survey 2024-25.

Despite this gap, the report highlights that J&K’s PCI at current prices is expected to grow at a robust rate of 10.6% in 2024-25, surpassing the all-India growth rate of 8.7%.

“In the most recent years (2023-24 to 2024-25), J&K has shown strong growth in PCI, outpacing the national growth rate,” the Economic Survey states.

The report attributes this upward trend to economic diversification and enhanced productivity across sectors. Over the past decade, J&K’s per capita income has increased significantly—rising by approximately 148% from 2014-15 to 2024-25, as per data from the UT government’s Planning Department.

While J&K’s PCI remains lower than the national average, the gap has been narrowing. The ratio of J&K’s PCI to India’s PCI has improved from 71.9% in 2014-15 to nearly 77.3% in 2024-25.

Moreover, J&K’s per capita income growth compares favorably with northern states. From 2019-20 to 2023-24, J&K recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.3%, surpassing Punjab (6.22%), Delhi (6.74%), and Himachal Pradesh (6%).

The figures indicate steady economic progress in J&K, with rising income levels reflecting improving living standards and economic resilience in the region.(KINS)
