Rain, thunderstorms forecast in J&K till May 11; Public urged to avoid water activities

Srinagar, May 5: The Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rain, thundershowers, and gusty winds across parts of Jammu and Kashmir until May 11, advising the public to exercise caution, especially around water bodies.

An official from the department said that on May 5, scattered areas of the region are likely to witness rain and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. From May 6 to 8, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy with light rain and thundershowers at isolated locations.

Between May 9 and 11, the department predicts more widespread activity, with light rain, thunder, and gusty winds likely at several locations. Intense thundershowers, lightning, and winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h may occur at isolated to scattered places during this period.

Cautioning against venturing into water bodies during inclement weather, the official advised residents and tourists to avoid boating and shikara rides in Dal Lake, Wular Lake, and other similar areas. The risk of landslides and mudslides in vulnerable locations also remains, he added.

People are urged to follow updates and advisories issued by the administration and traffic authorities. However, the department stated that weather conditions from May 6 onwards will be generally favorable for farming activities.(KINS
