Anantnag, Oct 08(KINS): The Department of Media Studies at SHMM Government Degree College, Anantnag, in collaboration with Kashmir Convener, organised a guest lecture on “Science Communication and Journalism” on Wednesday. The session was delivered by Rayies Altaf, Science Communication Specialist and Public Relations Officer at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, Rayies Altaf highlighted the growing importance of science communication in today’s world, especially amid climate change and technological advancements. He said science communication helps bridge the gap between researchers, policymakers, and the public.
He also spoke about various national and international fellowship opportunities for students interested in Science, Technology & Society (STS) studies and science communication. Altaf encouraged journalism students in Kashmir to explore this emerging field, noting that it offers exciting career opportunities and plays a key role in connecting science with everyday life.
Head of the Department of Media Studies, Imran Muzafar, said there is a rising demand for science journalists and communicators in mainstream media. “Science journalism is not just about technical details—it’s about telling the human stories behind scientific ideas,” he said, thanking the college principal Prof. (Dr.) Mushtaq Ahmad Malik for his support.
Zahid Maqbool, Consulting Editor of Kashmir Convener, said that science journalism is vital in connecting people with knowledge. He added that under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Sheikh Saleem, Kashmir Convener remains committed to promoting meaningful journalism that enhances public understanding of science.
The event ended with an interactive session where students asked questions about science communication and related policies. Syed Adil, Lecturer, Department of Media Studies, concluded the session by thanking the speakers and participants for their active engagement.(KINS)
