Srinagar, Nov 05 (KINS): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said her petition in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court seeks the transfer of J&K prisoners lodged in jails outside the Union Territory, citing the hardships faced by their families.
Mehbooba told news reporters that over 3,000–3,500 people have been arrested since 2019 and sent to prisons outside J&K, forcing many families to sell property for legal expenses or struggle to meet their relatives.
“We are not demanding release, but at least they should be shifted back to J&K so families can meet them and access legal aid easily,” she said.
The former chief minister said she had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the DGP, and the Chief Secretary seeking details of such prisoners but received no response.
She also criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for calling the matter sub-judice, questioning why he speaks about other sub-judice issues like statehood and Article 370 but not about prisoners.
Mehbooba said her move was purely humanitarian: “This is about easing the pain of helpless families who are suffering in silence.”(KINS)
