Leading From the front, Tanvir Sadiq revives Spirit of Shahr-e-Khaas Heritage Run
Srinagar May 16: Srinagar witnessed a vibrant celebration of fitness, heritage and community spirit on Sunday as the iconic Khyber Run for Shahr-e-Khaas made a historic return to Downtown Srinagar after a decade-long hiatus, with MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq leading from the front both as chief guest and participant.
Inspired by the vision of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to promote youth engagement, fitness and positive social initiatives, the heritage run brought the old city alive in the early morning hours as more than 160 professional and amateur athletes participated in the unique event dedicated to the message of a Drug-Free Kashmir.
Unlike conventional ceremonial appearances by public representatives, Tanvir Sadiq not only flagged off the event but also joined the runners on the historic route, running through the heart of Downtown Srinagar before later distributing prizes among athletes and participating clubs during the closing ceremony.
Organised jointly by KSW and Fucan Sports, the event was presented by Khyber Cement as title sponsor and supported by NITians, Paristaan Bridal, Adlife Heritage, Medialine, Red FM and Imaginor.
The run began from the historic Badamwari Gate at the foothills of the Hari Parbat fort and traversed through Kathi Darwaza, Chattipadshahi, Rainawari, Khanyar and several historic Downtown localities including Rajouri Kadal before culminating at the campus of Islamia College of Science and Commerce.
At the concluding ceremony, Tanvir Sadiq described the revival of the event as an emotional and symbolic moment for Srinagar’s old city.
“Ten years ago, I stood at this very event as a guest and flagged off the run. I never imagined that one day I would myself participate in it. Running today through the historic lanes of Shahr-e-Khaas was truly special because every street, every corner and every stone here carries its own story, culture and legacy,” he said.
Appreciating the athletes and organisers, he added “Despite last-minute adjustments, the event turned into a tremendous success. I congratulate the organising team and, most importantly, the athletes who travelled from Baramulla, Kupwara, Anantnag, Shopian and many other districts to be part of this run. Their participation reflects the growing awareness among our youth about fitness, health and the importance of staying away from drugs.”
Calling the run more than just a sporting event, Tanvir said “Run for Shahr-e-Khaas is not merely a race. It is an opportunity to reconnect with our heritage, culture and history. These streets have witnessed every chapter of Kashmir’s journey, and running through them is an experience in itself.”
He also praised the overwhelming public response witnessed along the route.
“The spirit of Downtown Srinagar truly came alive today. Residents from every walk of life came out to encourage the runners and appreciate the effort. It was heartening to see people cheering at every turn and corner. That warmth and sense of belonging define the true character of Shahr-e-Khaas. We are committed to continuing this event and making it even bigger and better in the years to come.”
Principal of Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Prof. (Dr.) Tehmina Yousuf, who attended the event as Guest of Honour, highlighted the importance of blending sports with heritage and community engagement.
“It is a matter of pride for Islamia College to host the concluding ceremony of such a meaningful and historic event. The revival of Run for Shahr-e-Khaas beautifully connects sports, heritage and youth participation. Events like these inspire young people towards healthy lifestyles while also helping them appreciate the rich cultural legacy of Srinagar’s old city,” she said.
Among others present on the occasion were noted fitness expert Sajad Hyder, SHO Nowhatta Inspector Iftikhar Ahmad, MD NITians Sheikh Mubashir, Director Medialine Muhammad Yaseen, Director Posh Enterprises Shabir Ahmed, Imaginor head Ruhaan, officials from the Health Department and Traffic Police, besides athletes and representatives of various sports clubs from across Jammu and Kashmir.
