Patwari arrested by ACB for accepting 10,000 bribe in Kathua

Jammu, July 16 (KINS): The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday trapped and arrested a Patwari posted in Patwar Halqa Mahanpur, Kathua district, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a complainant.

According to the ACB, a case under FIR No. 05/2026 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, was registered at Police Station ACB Jammu against Khajan Chand, Patwari, Patwar Halqa Mahanpur.

The complainant alleged that the accused had demanded ₹20,000 for providing mutation documents after the mutation was attested in favour of the complainant’s sister. The complainant had already paid ₹9,000, while the Patwari continued to demand the remaining amount. Following negotiations, the bribe was settled at ₹10,000 for handing over the mutation copy and related documents.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the ACB, which conducted a discreet verification. The verification confirmed the allegations, leading to the registration of the case and initiation of an investigation.

During the investigation, the ACB constituted a trap team that successfully caught the accused red-handed while accepting the ₹10,000 bribe in the presence of independent witnesses.

The accused was arrested on the spot after completing the required legal formalities, and the tainted bribe money was recovered from his possession. The ACB also carried out searches at the accused’s residence in accordance with the law and in the presence of independent witnesses.

Further investigation into the case is underway.(KINS)
