New Delhi, July 20 (KINS): The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Monday staged a protest in the national capital, reiterating its demand for the restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Leading the protest, National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah said the party was reminding the Centre of its commitment to restore statehood, a promise he said had been made by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
“Today, we are fighting for full statehood, which is a promise made by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister in Parliament, before the Supreme Court, and to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. We are here today simply to remind them of that commitment and to demand the restoration of complete statehood,” Farooq Abdullah told reporters.
The NC leaders raised slogans in support of statehood restoration, asserting that the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve the constitutional and democratic rights enjoyed by other states.
The protest comes amid growing political pressure on the Centre to fulfil its assurance of restoring statehood following the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019, when the erstwhile state was bifurcated into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.(KINS)
