Srinagar, Oct 21 (KINS): The Jammu and Kashmir government has hiked the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS medical interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000, bringing an end to the ongoing standoff with protesting interns.
The decision was formally notified by the Health and Medical Education Department, with the enhanced stipend coming into effect from October 1, 2026.
“Sanction is hereby accorded to the enhancement of the monthly stipend payable to MBBS/BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000 per month, with effect from 01.10.2026,” the government order stated as per news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).
The move comes after medical interns resumed their protest on Tuesday, demanding an increase in their monthly stipend. The interns had been seeking a hike to Rs 30,000, citing the need for better financial support during their internship.
The interns had earlier gone on strike in September to press for their demands. On September 8, the government had asked them to call off their strike and assured them that their concerns would be addressed within a month.
However, the interns resumed their agitation on Tuesday, alleging that the government’s assurance had not been fulfilled despite the deadline having passed.
Reacting to the decision, the Office of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the government had formally notified the enhancement of the monthly stipend, recognising the contribution of young medical professionals to the Union Territory’s healthcare system.
“In a significant decision, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir has formally notified the enhancement of the monthly stipend for MBBS/BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000, effective October 1, 2026,” the Chief Minister’s Office said.
It added that the decision would provide much-needed financial support to medical interns while acknowledging their dedication and commitment to patient care.
The enhancement marks a significant increase in the stipend paid to medical interns across Jammu and Kashmir, although it falls short of their demand for Rs 30,000 per month. (KINS)
