Srinagar, Oct 30 (KINS) : The Congress Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan (RGPRS), Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday organised public outreach programmes at Shahgund in Bandipora’s Naidkhai block and Sopore in Baramulla district to highlight the importance of grassroots democracy and strengthen local self-governance.
The programmes were held under the Jan Samvad–Awami-Rabita campaign, led by RGPRS J&K Chairman Er. Mudasir Lolabi and under the guidance of Thakur Hirapal Singh, In-charge RGPRS J&K.
During the programmes, Congress leaders interacted with local residents, former elected representatives and party workers. They discussed public issues and stressed the need to strengthen Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) so that people can have a greater role in decisions affecting their communities.
The leaders also criticised the delay in holding Panchayat and ULB elections in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that the absence of elected representatives was weakening grassroots democracy and limiting public participation in local governance. They called for early elections to restore elected local bodies.
The programme at Shahgund was organised by Inam-ul-Haq Bhat, General Secretary RGPRS J&K, while the Sopore programme was organised by Shahjahan Dar, District Chairman RGPRS Baramulla.
Those present included Gagandeep Singh, General Secretary RGPRS J&K; Akhtar Ahmad, District Co-Chairman RGPRS Baramulla; youth leader Kunwar Jamwal, besides former elected representatives, senior Congress leaders, party workers and local residents.
The leaders said that strong Panchayats were important for a healthy democracy and urged people to actively participate in Gram Sabhas and demand transparent and accountable governance.
They also appealed to the public to participate in the upcoming Congress Maha Rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.(KINS)
