Srinagar, Aug 27 (KINS): Zanskar has officially been recognized as a new district in the Union Territory of Ladakh, as announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday. The historic declaration marks a significant milestone for the region, fulfilling a long-standing demand from its residents.
The announcement was celebrated today during a press conference held by Executive Councilor Punchok Tashi of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil. Tashi expressed profound gratitude and joy on behalf of Zanskar’s residents, acknowledging the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Brigadier B.D. Mishra.
“This achievement is the result of decades of persistent efforts and the collective will of the people of Zanskar,” Tashi said. “We are immensely grateful to our leaders for recognizing our needs and granting us district status.”
In addition to Zanskar, four other new districts have been created in Ladakh: Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang. This reorganization is expected to enhance administrative efficiency and support regional development across the Union Territory.
