Decision on winter vacation extension hinges on weather conditions: J&K Education Minister ‘If weather improves, schools will reopen as per schedule’

Arshad Farooq

Srinagar, Feb 27 (KINS): Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Thursday stated that the government will decide on extending winter vacations if heavy snowfall persists.

She emphasized that authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation and will take a call accordingly.

“We are closely watching the weather conditions, and in case of heavy snowfall, we will make a decision on the extension of winter vacation tomorrow,” Itoo told news agency KINS over the phone.

However, she clarified that if the weather improves, schools will reopen as scheduled on March 1.

The statement comes amid persistent rain and snowfall across the Kashmir Valley, which has led to plummeting temperatures. Concerned parents have urged the administration to extend the vacation, citing severe cold and travel difficulties for students.

“The incessant rains have significantly lowered the temperature, and sending kids to school in such conditions is not a prudent decision. Just like the winter vacation was extended in Ladakh, the J&K government should consider a similar move, even if only for a short period,” said Shabir Ahmad, a parent.

With forecasts predicting more rain and snowfall in the coming days, the final decision from the government is expected soon.(KINS)
