NIA Chargesheets Three ISIS-Linked Accused in 2024 Srinagar Market Grenade Attack

NIA Chargesheets Three ISIS-Linked Accused in 2024 Srinagar Market Grenade Attack

Srinagar, May 03 (KINS): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against three individuals associated with the banned terrorist group ISIS/ISJK in connection with the November 2024 grenade attack at Srinagar’s Sunday Market that killed a woman and injured several civilians.

In a statement on Friday, an NIA spokesperson said the chargesheet was submitted before the NIA Special Court in Jammu. The accused—Sheikh Usama Yaseen, Umar Fayaz Sheikh, and Afnan Mansoor Naik—have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, the Explosive Substances Act, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

All three accused are currently in judicial custody. Usama and Umar were arrested on November 7, just four days after the grenade explosion on November 3, 2024, near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in a crowded marketplace. Afnan was taken into custody a day later for his active involvement in the conspiracy.

According to the NIA, investigations revealed that the trio meticulously planned and executed the attack with the objective of spreading terror, inciting panic, and disrupting public order in the region. The act was part of a larger terror strategy to wage war against India, targeting both security personnel and civilians.

The agency also noted that the attack may have involved additional terror elements, with efforts underway to identify and trace the broader network. The case, registered as RC-01/2025/NIA/JMU on January 31, 2025, remains under active investigation.

The chargesheet marks a key development in NIA’s ongoing crackdown on cross-border terror outfits attempting to destabilize Jammu and Kashmir through targeted acts of violence.(KINS)
