Bandipora, October 07 (KINS): Concern has gripped livestock owners in Saderkoot Payeen area of Bandipora following the reported sudden deaths of cattle at several households.
Affected livestock owners said their animals died unexpectedly, raising concerns over the possible cause of the deaths and the availability of timely veterinary assistance. They alleged that despite informing the Animal Husbandry Department, no immediate veterinary visit was made to the affected households.
The livestock owners further alleged that when they contacted the concerned veterinary doctor, they were told that the doctor was engaged in Agri Stack-related work.
One of the affected livestock owners said the doctor also informed him over the phone that a post-mortem examination would be required and samples might have to be sent outside the area for laboratory testing to establish the cause of death.
The livestock owner questioned how it could be determined whether the deaths were linked to a viral disease, infection or any other cause without proper examination and laboratory testing.
“If the cause of the disease has not yet been established, how can the appropriate treatment be decided? Unless samples are collected from at least one affected animal and tested, how will the exact cause be known?” the livestock owner said.
The deaths have also caused concern among local youth engaged in dairy and livestock farming. Residents said several young people have invested their savings or taken loans to purchase cattle and depend on livestock farming for their livelihood.
They said timely veterinary examination, proper diagnosis and laboratory testing are essential to determine the cause of the deaths and prevent further losses.
When contacted, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Dr Fayaz Abdullah Sheikh said a senior officer had been deputed to the area to assess the situation and ascertain the cause of the cattle deaths.
“We have sent a senior officer there to see what the matter is. He will submit a report, and further action will be taken accordingly,” Dr Sheikh said.
The affected livestock owners have urged the department to conduct the necessary examination and testing, establish the cause of the deaths and provide appropriate veterinary assistance based on the findings.
Residents are now awaiting the report of the deputed officer and further action by the concerned authorities.(KINS)
