Srinagar, Apr 22 (KINS): Tariq Hameed Karra on Tuesday paid a tribute to those who lost their lives in last year’s terror attack in Pahalgam, remembering in particular the young ponywallah who sacrificed his life while trying to save others.
In a statement, the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee said the victims’ memory would endure as a symbol of humanity and courage in the face of terror.
Karra said that “for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, remembrance of the attack continues to be accompanied by anguish and insecurity”.
He said “there is a growing feeling among people that the promise of democracy has weakened as institutions no longer enjoy meaningful authority and citizens continue to live under the shadow of recurring security concerns”.
He expressed concern that “governance was becoming reactive instead of anticipatory, and said that political approaches in recent years have failed to acknowledge the contribution, sacrifices and legitimacy of mainstream democratic voices in J&K”.
According to Karra, such an approach has widened the gap between the people and the state. He said “the present situation calls for reflection, course correction and a sincere willingness to listen, understand and act in the larger national interest”.(KINS)
