3 dead, 7 injured after truck falls into gorge

Three nomads were killed and seven others injured when the truck they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway here on Sunday. Around 20-25 sheep and goats also died in the accident, The Tribune reported.

Reports said that the deceased have been identified as Abdul Rashid (50), Mukhtyar Ahmed (22) and Nazia (16), all residents of Nagrota. The injured were identified as Mohd Haroon (28), Naseem (25), Usma (6) and Nusrat age (4), all residents of Panthal.

“A truck was on its way from Srinagar to Jammu and it lost control over it near Samroli and fell into a deep gorge,” said the report.

Police sources confirmed that the accident took place near Samroli village of Udhampur district around 2 am when the driver of the truck lost control over the vehicle while moving from Srinagar to Jammu with a Bakerwal family.

Three persons, including a girl, were found dead while seven others — three men, a woman and three children, were injured and taken to a hospital, a police officer said, adding that the condition of the injured was stated to be serious.

The bodies of the deceased were shifted to the community health centre, Chenani, and after conducting the post-mortem and later handed over to the family members for last rites.

Meanwhile, the injured were shifted to the District Hospital in Udhampur from where they were shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Jammu.

The police have registered a case in this regard and started the investigation, reported The Tribune.
