College students Oppose continuation of semester system exams

Urge KU to shift back to Annual exam system for colleges

Srinagar, Dec 23 : The Kashmir University’s decision to continue with the semester system of exams at undergraduate level has adversely affected the academic career of the students enrolled in Degree Colleges.

Due to the implementation of semester system of exams, the three year degree has been extended to four or five years.

An official told wire service—the outgoing 5th and 6thsemester students joined the course in 2016 and are yet to complete the course despite the passage of four years.

“Their last semester exams is scheduled in February while as the degree was supposed to get completed in 2018,” the official said. In the semester system of exams, the students appear in two exams in one year while as in previous annual system of exams, students would appear in only one exam annually.

The official said the students will now be able to apply for post-graduation courses in University from 2020 provided they qualify the exams.

“They should have joined the post-graduation courses in the state Universities or outside university from 2019,” the official told.

The official said the delay was due to implementation of semester exams.

Earlier, the Kashmir University had decided to hold two admission session from 2019 wherein previous year’s dropouts and fresh students would get accommodated in two separate batches.

“But the initiative didn’t work-out in wake of the uncertainty that erupted after Government of India decided to abrogate Article 370,” the official said.

Not only the 2016 batch, but the batches in other years also had to bear the brunt of the semester system of exams as their exams were not conducted on time.

Given the inordinate delay in completing their degrees on time, the students have blamed the KU authorities for stretching their degrees unnecessarily.

“The university should think about future of college students and decide to scrap the semester system of exams and shift back to annual exams,” a group of students said. An official from Kashmir University told KNO that they were holding deliberations on the issue.

“The semester system of exams was introduced by UGC and KU can’t do away with it. But we are holding meetings to review the decision,” the KU official said. (KNO)
