Much hyped winter tutorial a mere eyewash, allege students

Government lecturers spend time at private coaching centers, avoid attending winter tutorials for class 10, 12

Srinagar, Jan 07 : The much hyped winter tutorials started by the school education department in Kashmir has fallen flat as the initiative has proven to be a non-starter at 10+2 level in schools.

According to wire service—, the department started winter camps for students from primary to class 7th while as winter tutorial program was started from class 9thto 12th respectively. However, the class 11th and 12th students said that department has not deputed any teaching staff for taking their classes.

“The winter camps are running smoothly in every zone in Kashmir while as teachers are also taking classes in winter tutorials up to class 10th. But the class 11th and 12th students don’t have any lecturers to take their classes in these centres,” an official said.

A group of class 11th students also complained that they visit these winter tutorial centres every day to return home disappointed. “Department has not deputed any lecturer for class 11th and 12th. The initiative has remained confined to papers only,” a group of students told KNO.

They said the approached the office of Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs) and Chief Education Officers (CEOs) to get their grievance addressed but in vain. “They tell us that department is working on the issue. But till date the issue has not been resolved,” the students said.

The students also complained that the department has decided to provide coaching classes to only students of science stream while as no facility has been kept for Arts and commerce stream students.

“This is sheer injustice with us. The department is discriminating students on basis of subjects. If the tutorials for class 11th and 12th started functioning it should be available for students of all streams,” the students said.

A top official said the department was supposed to depute lecturers of respective subjects to teach students of class 11th and 12th in tutorials but the lecturers are not agreeing to teach at these centres given their engagements in private tuition centres.

“Almost all the lecturers of school education department are teaching at their private coaching centres due to which the department is facing difficulties in getting them motivated to teach at winter tutorials which has played a spoil sport for the department,” the official said.

He said the department cannot take action against these lecturers as the deputation to winter tutorial is volunteer against which the staff gets earned leave for the period during which they teach students in winter months.

“In past years, the department had imposed ban for government teachers to teach tat private coaching centre but it didn’t prove any good results. The practice is still going on,” the official said. (KNO)
