Srinagar, Aug 14: As Independence Day approaches, Srinagar and the wider Kashmir Valley are transformed into a vibrant display of the Indian flag’s colors. Streets, especially Lal Chowk, are illuminated with the tricolour, highlighting national pride with saffron, white, and green lights adorning government buildings, historical landmarks, and key sites.
“The festive spirit in Kashmir is palpable, with major roads, government offices, and prominent areas awash in the national colors. This illumination not only celebrates our freedom but also underscores our unity and diversity,” stated a senior government official.
In alignment with the Centre’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative, numerous tricolour rallies have been conducted across the region. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Jammu and Kashmir Police, and local administrators have been actively facilitating these events, which have seen enthusiastic participation from residents, including a large number of young individuals.
“These walkathons have been a testament to our dedication to the nation,” observed a senior police official.
The celebrations extend beyond Srinagar to districts like Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Shopian. Historical sites throughout the region have also been illuminated, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
A senior Jammu and Kashmir administration official commented, “These initiatives are part of our effort to engage the community in Independence Day festivities. The tricolour lighting and rallies reflect our collective spirit and national pride.”
In preparation for the celebrations, security measures across Kashmir have been significantly heightened. A comprehensive security plan, led by Director General of Police (DGP) R.R. Swain, includes extensive human and technical surveillance. The primary focus is on securing Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will oversee the main Independence Day event.
High-rise buildings around the stadium are monitored by sharpshooters, and advanced technology, including drones and access control systems, is in place.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, V.K. Birdi, who led a security rehearsal at Bakshi Stadium, assured, “Our multi-layered security measures are designed to ensure a smooth and trouble-free Independence Day. We are addressing all potential threats to maintain peace.”
In Jammu, where the main celebration will be held at Maulana Azad Stadium, security has also been tightened. Vigilance is being increased on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway, and additional measures are in place along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC). Vehicles entering or leaving Jammu are subject to thorough checks, with security forces conducting surprise inspections to prevent disruptions.
These heightened security arrangements reflect the authorities’ commitment to ensuring a safe and joyous Independence Day across Jammu and Kashmir, despite recent challenges.
