Govt forms committee for GMC Handwara relocation

Govt forms committee for GMC Handwara relocation

Srinagar, Dec 16 (KINS): The Jammu and Kashmir government has constituted a committee to resolve the issue of relocating the Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara after heavy floods in April this year inundated the under-construction structure, causing significant damage.

As per Government Order No. 2090-JK(GAD) of 2024, issued on December 16, the committee will be chaired by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, and includes members such as the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Principal GMC Handwara, and other senior officials. The committee will identify feasible sites, analyze safety parameters, ensure the availability of utilities, and examine encumbrance-free land for relocation.

However, the decision has drawn sharp reactions from residents who questioned the earlier site selection. “If the land was not feasible, why were crores of rupees wasted on construction?” they asked, demanding a high-level probe into the matter to hold those responsible accountable.

The committee has been directed to submit its findings and recommendations within 15 days to facilitate the relocation process.(KINS)
