No GST hike on Kashmiri shawls: CM Omar Pledges continued protection for Kashmir’s handicrafts

KINS DESK
Srinagar, Dec 21(KINS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday addressed growing concerns over a potential hike in GST on shawls, a cornerstone of Kashmir’s handicraft industry.
He said that his government had proactively intervened to ensure such a proposal was not taken forward.
“There was considerable speculation about a GST hike on shawls, so we had come prepared to ensure it didn’t happen. Thankfully, it wasn’t taken up, and we will make sure that in the future, such proposals are not considered,” Omar Abdullah stated while talking to reporters at Jaisalmer after attending the pre-budget discussions, as per news agency KINS.
The concerns stem from the unique challenges faced by the Kashmiri handicraft industry. Renowned for its intricate craftsmanship, particularly in Pashmina shawls, the sector is already grappling with rising production costs, declining demand, and competition from machine-made imitations.
An increase in GST would have further burdened the artisans, many of whom rely on this craft as their primary livelihood.
Handicrafts like shawls have been an integral part of Kashmir’s economy and cultural identity for centuries. However, in recent years, the sector has struggled due to shifting market dynamics and a lack of comprehensive government support.
Efforts to preserve this heritage have been sporadic, with stakeholders repeatedly seeking intervention to protect the industry from policies that could adversely impact their livelihoods.
Omar stressed on the importance of safeguarding J & J&K’s cultural legacy while addressing the economic concerns of artisans. “The shawl industry is not just an economic driver but a symbol of our identity. We must do everything possible to support the artisans who keep this heritage alive,” he added (KINS).
