MHA approves 20 new CRPF battalions for J&K

MHA approves 20 new CRPF battalions for J&K

Srinagar, July 16 (KINS): The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted in-principle approval for the creation of 20 new battalions of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The move is expected to add over 20,000 personnel to the security apparatus in the Union Territory.

The CRPF had initially proposed raising 35 battalions, but the MHA had cleared 20 as part of the first phase, particularly in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam militant attack and the subsequent launch of ‘Operation Sindoor’.

The proposal has already received clearance from the Union Finance Ministry, and final approval from the Union Cabinet is anticipated shortly.

According to officials, the newly raised battalions will be equipped with enhanced operational capabilities, specifically designed to meet the challenges of J&K’s complex terrain and evolving threat landscape. The decision is also part of a strategic shift, with increased focus on Jammu and Kashmir rather than Naxal-affected regions.

Deployment of additional CRPF companies across the Union Territory is expected soon, as part of a wider security restructuring to reinforce local police in law and order maintenance and counter-terrorism operations.

Senior security officials view the move as a clear signal of the Centre’s commitment to bolstering internal security and ensuring peace in the region.(KINS)
