Srinagar, Aug 20 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President and MLA Shalteng, Tariq Hameed Karra, on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Union Government after Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three key legislations in the Lok Sabha.
The Bills—now referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee—propose automatic removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, or Ministers who remain under arrest on serious criminal charges for more than 30 days. The Opposition strongly protested the move inside Parliament, terming it a step towards centralisation of power.
Reacting to the development, Karra as per news agency KINS said the legislations reflect an authoritarian drift. “Day by day, India is shifting from democracy towards autocracy. These Bills are not about accountability—they are about control. This is a hegemonic approach that sidelines democratic values and institutions,” he said.
Citing the provision for removing a minister after the 31st day of detention, Karra remarked that it symbolises a larger trend of power concentration. “This government is driven not by confidence, but by fear—fear of dissent, fear of Opposition, and even fear of its own public image,” he asserted.
Karra further accused the ruling establishment of failing on key fronts. “Be it internal security, foreign policy, or Jammu and Kashmir—this government has not delivered. Instead of solutions, it offers suppression. These Bills are born out of anxiety, not strength,” he said.
The Congress leader also questioned why the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood was missing from the government’s legislative agenda. “The people of J&K were hoping for restoration of their rights and status. But once again, their aspirations have been ignored,” he said. (KNS)
