Srinagar, Dec 4 (KINS): A major fire incident was averted on Thursday evening after the timely intervention of the Fire and Services Department and Jammu and Kashmir Police saved the busy Zaz Complex on Residency Road from potential devastation.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out on one of the top floors of the commercial complex, reportedly from a kitchen where sweet items were being prepared. Some employees of a sweets shop were staying in the premises, and the fire is believed to have originated from their kitchen area.

“Suddenly, thick smoke started coming out from the top floor. The fire spread quickly within the kitchen, but the Fire and Services Department reached the spot without delay and managed to douse the flames before it could spread to other shops,” an eyewitness told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS)

Police teams also reached the site promptly and helped in evacuating people and securing the area. No injuries were reported in the incident, officials confirmed.

Shopkeepers and locals expressed relief over the quick response, saying that any delay could have resulted in a massive tragedy due to the dense commercial activity in the area. “Had the fire engines not arrived on time, this entire complex could have gone up in flames,” another witness said.

However, the incident has raised serious concerns over safety norms. A shopkeeper in the complex said, “Proper procedures should be followed before allowing kitchens inside commercial buildings. This could have been disastrous.”

Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire and review safety compliance in the complex. (KINS)
