Srinagar, Apr 24 (KINS): In a sweeping anti-drug campaign under the ongoing 100-day Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday arrested 14 alleged drug peddlers across multiple districts of the Valley, seized significant quantities of contraband substances, attached assets linked to narcotics trade, and intensified awareness and enforcement measures.
Officials said arrests and recoveries were made in districts including Ganderbal, Anantnag, Budgam, Kupwara, Baramulla and Sopore during naka checking and targeted raids.
In Ganderbal, police intercepted a vehicle and recovered 100 bottles of Codeine Phosphate, while in Anantnag multiple operations led to the seizure of charas, heroin-like substances and poppy straw from several accused. A major recovery was reported in Budgam, where over 2.7 kilograms of charas powder was seized from a residential premises. In Kupwara, a vehicle-borne accused was caught with a substantial quantity of heroin-like substance.
In Baramulla, four individuals were apprehended during checking and found in possession of drug paraphernalia; medical examination confirmed opioid consumption. Meanwhile, in Sopore, psychotropic substances including Spasmoproxyvon capsules and Alprazolam tablets were recovered from an accused.
All accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and investigations are underway to trace supply chains and wider networks.
In a parallel action, police in Budgam attached a vehicle worth around ₹4 lakh belonging to an alleged drug peddler under provisions of the NDPS Act, aimed at dismantling financial assets linked to the narcotics trade.
Authorities also carried out extensive inspections of medical stores in Sopore and Kupwara to ensure compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, warning chemists against the illegal sale of prescription drugs.
Simultaneously, a series of awareness programmes, rallies and community outreach initiatives were conducted across districts such as Shopian, Awantipora, Kupwara and Baramulla to educate youth about the dangers of substance abuse and promote a drug-free lifestyle.
Police further intensified anti-narcotics checking with the deployment of sniffer dog squads and establishment of checkpoints at key locations, particularly in Ganderbal and Srinagar, to enhance detection and deter trafficking.
Reaffirming its commitment, J&K Police said the campaign will continue with strict enforcement, community participation and sustained awareness efforts to eliminate the menace of drugs and ensure a safer, healthier society.(KINS)
