Seven rescued from swollen Ujh river amid heavy rains in Kathua
Jammu, Aug 11 (KINS): Seven people, including four women, were rescued after being stranded in the swollen Ujh River in Kathua district following a sharp rise in water levels triggered by incessant rainfall, officials said on Tuesday.
The rescue operation was launched after Police Post Nagri received information that seven civilians had become trapped near Mahi Chak village as the river level rose suddenly.
Teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) conducted a joint rescue operation and, after sustained efforts, safely evacuated all seven persons. They were later handed over to their families, a police spokesman said.
The rescued individuals were identified as Malka Khatam, 50, Zulfa Begum, 30, Seema Begum, 60, Iqbal Ali, 9, Shaina Bano, 11, Mobina Bano, 17, and Asia Bano, 16.
Police urged people to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall and avoid going near rivers, streams and other water bodies. (KINS)
