Srinagar, Apr 30: In response to the deferment of the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha polls, the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have voiced their concerns, highlighting what they perceive as a “denial of democratic rights in the region”.
NC’s state spokesperson, Imran Nabi Dar, took to social media to express his dismay, stating, “The rescheduling of Anantnag PC is a concern that should worry all who believe in the independence of our poll bodies. It’s troubling that the opinions of political parties not even in the race were taken into account. No matter what they do, Insha Allah @JKNC_ will win the seat.”
Similarly, Wheed Para, the PDP candidate for the Srinagar Parliamentary seat, condemned the postponement, asserting, “Postponing elections and denying democratic space to the people of Jammu and Kashmir has become the new norm. The least the government could have offered Kashmiris was the right to elect. This denial is simply unacceptable.”
Iltija Mufti, daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and spokesperson for her mother’s party, also weighed in, suggesting “political motives behind the delay”. She wrote, “Anantnag – Rajouri elections postponed only because they fear Ms. Mufti will win overwhelmingly. Only because they don’t want a fearless voice in the parliament. But we accept this challenge & will make sure she wins by a bigger margin Inshallah.”
