Srinagar, Apr 30: The District Administration of Kupwara has vehemently refuted the dissemination of fake news by certain news channels and online portals, emphasizing the need for responsible journalism and fact-checking standards.
“Today, both ‘The WEEK’ news magazine and NDTV.Com published headlines alleging “5 killed, several injured in landslides and flash floods in Kupwara of J&K,” which the administration has categorically dismissed as baseless and misleading”.
In an official statement issued by Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan, it was affirmed that the headlines circulated by these news channels are entirely fabricated and devoid of truth, as there have been no flood-related fatalities reported in Kupwara district.
Expressing strong condemnation of the false narrative, the Deputy Commissioner reiterated that no loss of life due to floods has occurred within the district’s jurisdiction. The administration emphasizes the importance of verifying facts before disseminating information, urging media outlets to uphold ethical reporting standards.
Despite the expectation that news outlets verify the accuracy of their reports prior to publication, the online portals of the aforementioned news magazine and channel have failed to meet this fundamental journalistic obligation. The Kupwara Administration underscores the need for accountability and accuracy in reporting to prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain public trust in the media.
