Ceasefire a Welcome Step, But Lives Lost Could Have Been Saved Earlier: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, May 10 (KINS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the India-Pakistan ceasefire agreement.

He said had the ceasefire been implemented 2-3 days ago, precious lives could have been saved.

Abdullah confirmed that the ceasefire was initiated following a call from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to the Indian counterpart, leading to its enforcement.

He emphasized that it is now the duty of the Jammu and Kashmir government to assess the damage caused by recent hostilities and begin relief efforts. “All Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to carry out a final assessment of the damage and submit their reports so we can begin distributing aid,” he added.

The Chief Minister also stressed that those injured must receive proper medical treatment and support under existing government schemes. Highlighting the extent of destruction, particularly from fires, he called for urgent rehabilitation.

Omar Abdullah further mentioned that the prolonged closure of the airport has impacted the region, expressing hope that it will resume operations following the ceasefire.(KINS)
