Srinagar, Dec 27 (KINS): As Kashmir reels under severe winter conditions, the Department of Cardiology at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on Friday issued a public health advisory, cautioning against a sharp rise in cardiac emergencies during the cold spell.
“Delay can be fatal,” the advisory warned, explaining that extreme cold poses serious and sometimes life-threatening risks, particularly for vulnerable individuals. The department stressed the need for timely preventive measures and greater public awareness of early warning signs of heart-related distress.
Medical experts noted that exposure to cold weather leads to constriction of blood vessels, resulting in elevated blood pressure and increased strain on the heart. This physiological response significantly raises the risk of heart attacks—a trend observed globally during harsh winter months.
The advisory calls upon people, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing heart conditions, to take extra precautions and seek immediate medical attention in case of symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, or sudden discomfort.(KINS)
