A resident of Pulwama district who allegedly ferried two Hizb ul Mujahideen militants before a shootout on November 25 surrendered on Saturday, Border Security Force said in a statement.
A BSF spokesman said: “He was wanted in connection with the encounter which took place in village Drabgam, Pulwama, on November 25 in which two militants – Irfan Ahmed Sheikh and Irfan Ahmed Rather – were killed. He was driving the vehicle which the militants used.”
The BSF identified the man as Muzaffar Ahmed Wani, 34, a resident of Achan, Pulwama, saying he surrendered before the IG BSF in Srinagar.
The spokesman said Wani was an associate of Hizb.
He said that Wani was earlier an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of Lashkar-e-Toiba and was arrested in 2010. “He was detained in Kathua jail for eight months. After about two months, he was re-arrested for the same case and lodged in Mattan jail for another eight to 10 months,” the spokesman said. “He was also taken into custody during the 2016 agitation.”
Wani has his mother, wife, a six-year-old son and a four-year-old daughter in his family, officials said.
“After completing the requisite formalities, he was handed over to In-charge Police Station Pulwama this afternoon for further necessary action as per laid down procedures,” the BSF spokesman said.
