Center adopting coercive measures to silence dissent

PDP credible, realistic political voice

Jammu, Jan 30 : Peoples Democratic Party today said that while the union government was busy in normalcy theatrics, the administration was adopting coercive measures to silence dissent in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement they said “Dissent is the essence of democracy and no society can flourish where the disagreements are curbed by force”, the PDP leaders said in a meeting held here at the party office to discuss the current political situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting was attended by former legislators Surinder Choudhary and Firdous Tak besides Falail Singh, RK Bali, Satpaul Charak, Sardar Narender Singh, SS Sanrangal (retired judge), Ashok Jogi, Shaifq ul Rehman, Sheikh Nasir Hussain, Sheikh Ghulam Mohi ud Din, Varinder Singh Sonu, E Peter, Arshad Hussain, Advocate, KY Manhas (retired judge), Uttam Singh Bhajwa, RK Pardesi, Sunil Bhat, Mohd Hafiz Wani, Sachin Kumar, Deepak Gupta, Kuldeep Sharma, Rajinder Singh, Deljeet Singh.

The meeting resolved that the party stands united to fight the present onslaught on the democratic and constitutional intuitions. “The cadre of the organisation in every nook and corner of Jammu and Kashmir stand behind our present Ms. Mehbooba Mufti in our resolve to serve masses”, the speakers said adding, “Even in present circumstances PDP is the only credible, realistic political voice in Jammu and Kashmir and every attempt to divide and weaken the organisation will be foiled”.

The speakers said that Mufti Muhammad Sayed formed Peoples Democratic Party as credible political alternative in Jammu and Kashmir not for the sake of power but instead to represent legitimate aspirations and wishes of people of this trouble torn part of country. “PDP fought against corruption, nepotism and reign of terror which were unleashed in the erstwhile state. PDP never tried to create regional or religious divide to reap political benefits and instead we tried to reach out to every nook and corner to win hearts and winds of the people,” they said and added that PDP’s pro-peace policies were positively reciprocated by the people.

They said that prolong detention of political leadership including three former Chief Ministers, former ministers, civil society members beside others was an indication as how the genuine voices were being curbed. “You cannot achieve political targets by curbing dissent. There has never been any alternative to political reach out and the present dispensation must understand this fact”, they said.

“While internally the democratic institutions need to be strengthened, on the external front we cannot visualise any alternative to reconciliation and dialogue,” the speakers added.
