Sopore girl who threatened to commit suicide is in police custody now

Sopore: Sopore police claimed to have traced the national level athlete Nighat Bashir who had earlier threatened to commit suicide if her grievances aren’t addressed by the local administration.

Hours back family of the girl had complained that Nighat Bashir was missing from home and they fear she might have committed suicide.

Nighat Bashir of Seelu Sopore earlier this evening while taking to micro blogging site twitter said that she will commit suicide by jumping into river Jehlum tomorrow in protest against alleged harassment by army and the police.

Taking cognizance of the social media post, senior officers of Police district Sopore rushed to the house of the girl along with some respectable citizens of the area.

Police said that they encountered stiff resistance from the family members of the girl and hurled abuses as they were claiming that the girl has already jumped into the river.
A police officer said that the police party on job while trying to locate the girl did its best to pacify the family with the help of respectable citizens but the family was quite adamant and created ruckus.

“The family concealed the whereabouts of the girl but acting professionally and putting die hard efforts, our team traced the girl who was hiding in the back yard of the house,” the police official said.

He said that the girl was retrieved and taken to hospital for immediate treatment.

The police official said that Sopore police is investigating the matter and efforts are on to retrieve every possible detail surrounding the girl’s allegations of harassment and brazen announcement of committing suicide through a social media platform as well looking whether the persistent social media activism and allegations made by the girl are part of any broader conspiracy to create disorder in the area.
