EJAC says ‘peaceful’ protest will now be held on July 14

KINS Desk

Srinagar, July 5(KINS): A press conference of Employees Joint Action Committee was held Sunday in Srinagar under the leadership of its President Fayaz Ahmad Shabnam.

The main highlight of the press conference was that EJAC has changed the July 6 program to next Tuesday on 14th July due to security reasons on the opening of offices of the Civil Secretariat.

In a statement to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) EJAC President Fayaz Ahmad Shabnam said that the peaceful protest to be held on 6th of July in front of Civil Secretariat has been postponed to next Tuesday on 14th of July because of the concerns of the authorities regarding the security issues on the eve of Durbar Move. He said that the concerned authorities contacted the EJAC leadership regarding the 6th July program and were asked to postpone the program due to the security reasons. The concerned authorities also assured the EJAC leadership that they will be given full permission for the next date as it is the fundamental right of the employees. In this regard, an emergency meeting of EJAC leadership was held which was followed by a press conference; in which it was unanimously decided that EJAC will respect the concerns of the authorities and will now hold the peaceful protest on next Tuesday, 14th of July in front of the Civil Secretariat.

In the press conference, the plight of the daily wagers and all types of temporary workers who have been working tirelessly in various departments of J&K for more than 25 years on a meager salary with which they are not even able to make their two ends meet was also highlighted.

It was also stated that the regularization of daily wagers is not a new agenda of the association but it has been there since decades. “The previous governments have time and again made agreements with the EJAC leadership regarding the regularization of daily wagers but till now no positive outcome arose in this regard. Also the daily wagers and all types of temporary workers have been continuously given a cold shoulder by the government which has forced the EJAC to come out on streets and protest for their rights,” the statement said.

Furthermore, the government has issued orders for the recruitment of various Class IV posts which is a welcome step but it would be necessary to take the predicament of daily wagers and all types of temporary workers into consideration and initiate steps to regularize them first.

“It will be irony that in this new recruitment both the father and son will have to apply for the same post in case of daily wagers and all types of temporary workers.

Moreover, it was emphasized on the government to initiate some concrete steps for the regularization of daily wagers for all types of temporary workers so that EJAC won’t be compelled to protest in this regard,” the statement reads.(KINS)
