Thousands of Shia Muslim Mourners Join Eighth Muharram Procession in Srinagar

Srinagar, July 15: Thousands of Shia Muslim mourners took part in the eighth Muharram procession in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, on Monday. The event, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, was permitted by authorities following assurances from organizers that it would be peaceful and disciplined.
The procession began at Guru Bazaar and concluded in the Dalgate area of Srinagar. Participants honored Imam Hussain, his family, and his supporters, who were martyred by Yazid’s army in the desert of Karbala, Iraq.
IGP Kashmir Zone V. K. Birdi and civil administration officers closely monitored the event. The IGP also participated by serving water and cool drinks to the mourners.
Throughout the procession, mourners shouted pro-Islam slogans and praised Imam Hussain’s sacrifice, maintaining a responsible demeanor that prevented any sectarian tensions from arising.
