Srinagar, August 9: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, in collaboration with the host State Jammu & Kashmir, held a regional training workshop for the 21st Livestock Census. The training, conducted today in Srinagar, was aimed at equipping State and District Nodal Officers (SNO/DNO) from Jammu & Kashmir and the UT of Ladakh with the necessary skills to use the newly launched mobile and web applications for the census, scheduled for September-December 2024.
Smt. Alka Upadhyaya offered virtual best wishes and highlighted the significant impact of the livestock sector on India’s economy and its global trade position. The workshop was inaugurated by Shri Jagat Hazarika, Advisor (Statistics), DAHD, in the presence of key officials including G A Sofi, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture Production, Jammu & Kashmir, Dr. B P Mishra from ICAR-NBAGR, V.P Singh from DAHD, and Dr. Altaf Ahmad Laway, Director of AHD Kashmir.
The ceremony began with the national anthem and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. The dignitaries emphasized the importance of leveraging technology for accurate data collection and the need for meticulous planning and execution to ensure the success of the census.
Jagat Hazarika stressed the role of technology in enhancing the efficiency of data collection and urged all stakeholders to contribute actively to the census process. G A Sofi highlighted the importance of the livestock sector for India’s economy and food security and called for thorough training and capacity building. Dr. Altaf Ahmad Laway discussed the integration of sustainable practices and the potential benefits of census data for future policies, programs, and employment opportunities in animal husbandry.
The workshop included detailed sessions on the census methodologies, software applications, and breed identification, led by experts from the Animal Husbandry Statistics Division and ICAR-NBAGR. These sessions aimed to prepare the nodal officers for their roles in training enumerators and ensuring accurate data collection.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by V.P. Singh, who expressed gratitude to all participants and stakeholders, and concluded on a hopeful note for the successful execution of the census.
