Srinagar, Sep 08 (KINS): Former Jammu and Kashmir Minister, Taj Mohiuddin who recently left Ghulam Nabi Azad’s Democratic Progressive Azad party, Sunday revealed that he is contesting the upcoming assembly elections as an independent candidate, garnering support from various political parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Taj Mohiuddin, a veteran politician, emphasized the growing momentum of independent candidates in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that his candidacy has received backing from multiple political corners, signifying widespread recognition of his influence.
Mohiuddin told news agency KINS over phone, that a coalition of at least eight independent candidates has emerged, with the members pledging mutual support in the forthcoming election.
“We, a group of eight independents, have come together to strengthen each other’s campaigns for this assembly election. Our alliance of independent candidates will play a critical role in government formation, especially if no party secures a clear majority,” Mohiuddin asserted.
Highlighting the increasing relevance of independent candidates, Taj Mohiuddin stressed the importance of their unity and the possibility of becoming kingmakers in a closely contested election.
When questioned about the possibility of supporting a National Conference (NC)-Congress coalition government in the post-election scenario, Mohiuddin was measured but pragmatic in his response.
“We are open to supporting any party that prioritizes the welfare and development of the people. Our focus is not on party allegiances but on ensuring good governance and policies that benefit the region,” he remarked.
However, Mohiuddin made it clear that the alliance of independents would not extend its support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “We will not support the BJP in forming the government,” he said.
The emergence of this independent bloc adds a new dimension to the political landscape of the region. With the potential to sway government formation in a tightly contested election, the independent candidates are positioning themselves as a decisive force. (KINS)
