Moderate to heavy snowfall expected in J&K from Feb 25-28: Authorities issue advisory

Srinagar, Feb 25 (KINS): The Jammu and Kashmir administration has issued an advisory in view of an active Western Disturbance expected to affect the region from the evening of February 25 to February 28.

The weather system is likely to bring widespread moderate rain, snow, and thunderstorms across most parts of the Union Territory, with heavy to very heavy snowfall anticipated in higher reaches.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, light to moderate rain and snow will begin over North and Central Kashmir on the evening of February 25 and intensify in the following days. The affected areas include Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Baramulla, Bandipora (Gurez and Tulail Valley), Kupwara (Machil and Tangdhar), Shopian (Pir Ki Gali), and the Qazigund-Ramban axis. In Jammu Division, heavy snowfall is expected in Doda, Kishtwar, and the Pir Panjal Range.

Authorities according to news agency KINS have warned of possible disruptions in surface and air transportation, including the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Sadhna Pass, Razdan Pass, Sonmarg-Zojila Axis, Sinthan Top, and Mughal Road. Travelers, tourists, and transporters have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly.

“Additionally, the weather system may trigger landslides, shooting stones, and mudslides in vulnerable areas. Farmers have been advised to suspend irrigation and other farming activities during this period. A significant drop in daytime temperatures is also expected,” the advisory reads.

The Srinagar district administration has directed departments, including Revenue, PWD, Irrigation & Flood Control, Jal Shakti, and Health & Medical Education, to remain on high alert and ensure swift snow clearance. Field staff have been instructed to stay at their respective headquarters to provide immediate assistance.

The general public has been urged to contact the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC), Srinagar, which is operational 24/7 to address grievances and emergency situations.(KINS)
